Thirty-four young people took part in two ENGAGE civic forums in Romania designed to strengthen civic competences and create direct dialogue between youth and local institutions.
Held in Slătioara and Suceava, the events combined interactive workshops, group challenges, and meetings with public representatives, using a Living Lab approach focused on participation and co-creation. Participants worked through activities such as designing a “perfect country,” exploring governance, education, and community priorities while identifying challenges in their own local environments.
A key element of both forums was direct dialogue with decision-makers. In Slătioara, participants met Valentin Curcă from the RYMA Association, while in Suceava they spoke with Deputy Prefect George Bogdan Păstrăv. One participant described the experience as opening a new perspective on participation: “I didn’t really know how things work before, but now I feel like I can actually ask questions and understand the answers.” Another reflected on the collaborative process: “Working in groups made me realise how many ideas we can come up with when everyone contributes.”
Organisers noted that engagement grew significantly throughout the day, with many participants becoming more confident in expressing ideas and asking questions about civic life. By the end of the forums, several participants expressed interest in volunteering and taking a more active role in their communities.
The forums were designed to move beyond theory, giving young people practical experience in civic participation and direct access to institutional dialogue in a setting built around inclusion and cooperation.
